Five straight red bars on M5 is the dip. Three stacked M30 moving averages are the current. When both line up, it buys once — a 200-pip target against a 100-pip stop, with the stop moved to entry once the trade is 60 pips ahead.

Strategy logic

How Lanternfish Trades

A mean-reversion EA that buys USD/JPY after five consecutive down bars on M5, but only while the M30 trend filter (SMA 25/50/75 in perfect order) points up, then manages the single position with a fixed 200-pip target, a 100-pip stop and a break-even move at 60 pips.

01 Market

When it trades

USD/JPY, Trend-Gated

There is no session or time filter, but there is a regime gate — the EA only acts while the M30 SMA 25/50/75 stack is in upward perfect order. Outside that alignment it stays flat.

02 Setup

What it looks for

Five Straight Down Bars

Five consecutive closed M5 bars must each close below their open — a sharp short-term dip. All bars are read after closing, so the signal cannot repaint.

The dip count and the trend stack must be true on the same closed bar.

03 Entry

How it enters

One Buy Into The Dip

A single buy opens at the ask on the bar after the fifth down bar, only if the spread is within the 40-point guard. The build has no sell branch — downward-aligned markets are sat out entirely.

04 Risk

How it protects

Fixed 100-Pip Stop

A 100-pip stop-loss is attached to the order when it is sent — half the size of the target. Until the break-even trigger fires, that stop is the whole of the risk control.

05 Exit

How it exits

200-Pip Target Or Break-Even

The position closes at the 200-pip take-profit or the stop. Once the trade is 60 pips ahead, the stop moves to one pip past entry, so trades that reach that point can no longer close at a full loss.

  • Steady uptrends with sharp, short-lived pullbacks — the dip fills, the trend resumes, and the 200-pip target is reached

Can struggle in

  • Trend tops, where a five-bar dip is the start of the reversal and the 100-pip stop is hit
  • Long sideways phases — the M30 stack never aligns, and the EA does nothing for weeks

Frequently asked questions

Is Lanternfish a martingale or grid EA?
No. It opens one position at a time with a fixed lot, a fixed 100-pip stop and a fixed 200-pip target. There is no averaging down, no grid, no recovery trade and no lot progression of any kind.
How was it tested?
On Exness MT5 USD/JPY history in the MetaTrader 5 strategy tester, on the "every tick" model generated from M1 bars, from 2019-01-01 to 2026-08-08 with 0.1 lot on a $10,000 balance. The tester reported the history quality of that run as 100%. The published backtest is the part of that run that ends at the 2026-04-01 cutoff; what the same build did after that date is shown separately as the verification window, so the two never share a trade. Every closed trade is published on this page and downloadable as CSV.
Does the backtest include swap?
Yes. The per-deal swap from the broker's contract specification is included in the published profit figures, and the trade ledger carries it per trade. The median hold is about two days, so swap is a real part of this record.
Why does it only buy?
The trend filter is directional — the M30 SMA stack must be aligned upward before a dip is bought. The shipped build has no mirrored sell branch, so downward-aligned markets are sat out rather than traded.
Why does it sometimes do nothing for weeks?
Both conditions must be true at once — five straight down bars and an upward M30 stack. In sideways or falling markets the stack is not aligned, so no trades are taken. Silence is the filter working, not the EA failing.
Does it trade at particular hours?
No. There is no time or session filter. A qualifying dip on any closed M5 bar can open a trade, day or night, as long as the spread is inside the 40-point guard.
