Peregrine

A single-position Bitcoin trend follower that trades the Ichimoku Tenkan/Kijun cross on the four-hour chart and lets a percent trailing stop ride BTC's momentum.

One closed-bar cross of Tenkan through Kijun, taken only when the signal bar's body beats 1.3x the two-day average — Bitcoin moving with intent. One position either way, a 2.9655% stop attached from the start, and a trailing stop at 0.8896% of entry that banks the move. 78% of trades in the record closed on the winning side; the losers are larger, and that trade-off is the whole design.

Wie Peregrine handelt

A trend-following EA that opens a single position, long or short, when the Ichimoku Tenkan line crosses the Kijun line on BTCUSD H4 during a volatility burst, protects it with a 2.9655% stop, and exits by trailing the move at 0.8896% of the entry price.

01 Markt

Wann gehandelt wird

Bitcoin, Around The Clock

BTCUSD trades essentially 24/7, including weekends. There is no session filter — every closed H4 bar is checked whenever the market prints one, so the EA behaves the same on any broker's server clock.

02 Setup

Wonach gesucht wird

A Cross During A Burst

Two things must line up on the same closed bar — the Tenkan-sen (7) crossing the Kijun-sen (26), and that bar's body being at least 1.3x the average body of the last 14 four-hour bars. A cross on a quiet bar is ignored.

Only these two Ichimoku lines are used. The cloud is not part of the rule.

Wie eingestiegen wird

One Position, Either Direction

An upward cross opens a buy, a downward cross opens a sell — always a single position. A new signal while a position is open is ignored, so the EA never stacks or hedges.

04 Risiko

Wie abgesichert wird

A Wide Stop, Sized For Bitcoin

The stop-loss is 2.9655% of the entry price, attached to the order when it is sent. It is deliberately wide — Bitcoin's four-hour bars routinely move more than an index does in a day — and because it is a percentage it scaled with BTC from $7,000 to $120,000 without re-tuning.

A Percent Trailing Stop

There is no fixed target. Once the trade is ahead by at least 0.8896% of the entry price, the stop trails at that distance and only moves in the trade's favour. The position closes when price comes back to the trail — or at the initial stop if the move never gets going.

  • Whipsawing ranges with big bars — the burst filter passes them, the direction does not hold, and the wide stop makes each failure expensive
  • Slow grinding trends made of small bars — the 1.3x body filter keeps the EA out even though the direction is right

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Is Peregrine a martingale or grid EA?
No. It opens one position at a time at a fixed size, with a stop-loss attached to the order from the moment it is sent. There is no averaging down, no grid, no recovery trade and no lot progression of any kind.
How was it tested?
On Exness MT5 BTCUSD history in the MetaTrader 5 strategy tester, on the "every tick" model generated from M1 bars, over a 2019-01-01 to 2026-08-01 window at 0.1 lots on a $10,000 balance. Exness's BTCUSD tick history begins in July 2021, so the trades effectively span July 2021 to August 2026 — about five years. The published backtest is the part that ends at the 2026-04-01 cutoff; what the same build did after that date is shown separately as the verification window, so the two never share a trade. Every closed trade is published on this page and downloadable as CSV.
Does the backtest include swap?
Yes. Positions held past the rollover were charged swap from the broker's history — 69.37 USD in total across the run — and the published profits are net of it. Check your own broker's BTCUSD contract terms, as crypto swap policies differ widely.
How deep can the drawdown get?
The measured equity drawdown was 8.34% of the account, and the record includes single losing months of roughly minus four percent — noticeably deeper than our index EAs. That is the honest cost of holding Bitcoin momentum with a stop wide enough (2.9655% of price) to survive its four-hour bars. If those numbers are uncomfortable at 0.1 lots, size down or choose a calmer product.
Why is there no take-profit?
The exit is a trailing stop instead — once a trade is ahead by 0.8896% of the entry price, the stop follows the move at that distance and only tightens. A fixed target would cap every winner at a preset size; the trail lets a Bitcoin leg run while converting the gain into a floor that cannot be given back.
The win rate is 78% — where is the catch?
In the trade sizes. The trail banks many modest wins, while a stopped-out trade loses close to three times a typical winner. The record is profitable because the win rate stays well above what that asymmetry needs, but a run of failed crosses shows up as a losing month — several appear in the published ledger, and they are part of the design, not an accident.
Does it trade at particular hours?
No. There is no time or session filter, and Bitcoin itself trades around the clock including weekends. A qualifying cross on any closed four-hour bar can open a trade, day or night.
