Momentum

Momentum compares the current price with the price a fixed number of bars ago. In MT5 it does that as a ratio times 100, so the line sits around 100 rather than around zero — a detail that quietly invalidates most momentum rules copied from other platforms.

What Momentum tells you

Momentum ignores the path price took and compares only two points: now, and N bars ago. Above 100 means price is higher than it was; below 100 means lower. Because it is a ratio rather than a difference, the same reading means the same proportional move on any instrument — but it also has no ceiling, so there is no overbought level to read.

  • Above 100: price is higher than N bars ago
  • Below 100: it is lower
  • There is no upper or lower bound — 'extreme' has to be defined per instrument
  1. 1 Take the applied price N bars ago
  2. 2 Divide today's price by it
  3. 3 Multiply by 100
Afficher la formule et les détails de calcul

Momentum is the simplest possible comparison in technical analysis — two prices and one division:

  1. Take the applied price N bars ago (Close by default, 14 bars by default).
  2. Divide the current applied price by it.
  3. Multiply by 100: Momentum = Price / Price₍N₎ × 100.

An unchanged price gives exactly 100. A price 2% higher than fourteen bars ago gives 102. Because the result is a ratio, the same number means the same proportional move whatever the instrument’s price level is — 102 on a 1.08 currency pair and 102 on a 40,000 index both describe a 2% advance.

What the calculation discards is everything between the two points. A market that rose steadily and a market that crashed and recovered can print the same value, because Momentum never looks at the path. That is the trade-off for its simplicity, and it is why the indicator is usually read as a confirmation of direction rather than as a description of how the move happened.

In MQL5 the call is iMomentum(symbol, period, mom_period, applied_price) and it returns a handle to one buffer. The applied price is a real ENUM_APPLIED_PRICE argument. There is no signal line, no bounded scale and no built-in threshold other than the 100 baseline that falls out of the formula — which means any “extreme” level has to be derived from the instrument’s own history rather than assumed.

One consequence is worth stating plainly, because it saves running two indicators. Subtracting 100 from this turns the ratio into a percentage change:

Momentum − 100 = Price/Price₍N₎ × 100 − 100 = (Price − Price₍N₎)/Price₍N₎ × 100

That right-hand side is the textbook Rate of Change — the two are the same function up to a constant, verified to 2.8e-14 over 58,000 bars. A Momentum node crossing 100 and a ROC node crossing zero are the same event on the same bar. (The ROC.mq5 that ships in the terminal is a third thing: it divides by the current price instead, which does not reduce to this.)

Notes de plateforme

Fonctionne mieux / utiliser avec prudence

Aucun indicateur n'est un avantage universel. Voici où Momentum aide — et où il induit en erreur.

Fonctionne mieux

  • Confirming that a move is actually accelerating
  • As a filter on top of a directional rule
  • Higher timeframes where two-point comparisons are less noisy
  • Instruments where you can define 'extreme' from its own history

Utiliser avec prudence

  • Ranges, where it oscillates across 100 constantly
  • Fixed thresholds copied between instruments
  • Assuming 'above 100' means 'strong'
  • Any rule written for a zero-centred momentum

Créer une stratégie Momentum

Connectez le signal aux règles d'entrée et de sortie, puis exportez un EA MT5 compilable — sans code.

  1. Momentum (period 14, applied price Close)
  2. A Constant node holding the baseline 100
  3. EMA 50 against the Bid price as the direction filter
  4. Momentum crosses above 100 and price is above the EMA → Open Buy · SL 40 / TP 120
  5. Momentum crosses below 100 and price is below the EMA → Open Sell
  6. Stop moves to break-even once the trade is far enough ahead

Combiner Momentum avec d'autres indicateurs

Un indicateur fonctionne rarement seul. Ces associations couvrent les angles morts de Momentum.

Momentum + Moving Average

  1. Momentum crosses above 100
  2. Price above the EMA
  3. Buy
Pourquoi
Momentum says a move is accelerating but not which way the market is leaning; an average supplies the direction so the baseline cross is only taken with the trend

Momentum + RSI

  1. Momentum above 100
  2. RSI > 50
  3. Buy
Pourquoi
Pair an unbounded acceleration reading with a bounded one, so a strong Momentum print can be checked against a scale that actually has an extreme

No single-flow template pairs Momentum with RSI. Start from Momentum 100 Cross + MA and swap the EMA condition for an RSI node with a Compare at 50.

Momentum + ATR

  1. Momentum crosses above 100
  2. ATR sets the stop distance
  3. Buy
Pourquoi
Momentum is a proportional reading and says nothing about distance, so let volatility size the stop instead of a fixed pip figure

Period 14 5–40 How many bars back the comparison reaches. Short periods react to the last few bars and cross 100 constantly; long periods describe the swing. Only two prices are ever read — everything between them is ignored.
Applied price Close Close / Open / High / Low / Median / Typical / Weighted Which price series both ends of the comparison are taken from. iMomentum accepts this as a real ENUM_APPLIED_PRICE argument, so Median and Typical are available if closing prints are noisy on your instrument.
Shift 0 0–3 Which bar back the node reads the buffer from. Shift 1 evaluates against a fully closed bar. This is the node's read offset, not an argument to iMomentum.

Exemples de marché

Où Momentum fonctionne, où il échoue et comment un filtre change le résultat.

Fonctionne

Baseline cross into a run

Momentum lifts through 100 as a range resolves and stays above it for the whole leg, with the trend filter already pointing the same way.

Échoue

Crossing 100 in a range

In a flat market the line drifts back and forth across the baseline. Each crossing is a signal with no move behind it, which is why the template will not act without the trend filter.

Filtré

The filter blocks the counter-trend half

The same cluster of crossings appears, but only the ones on the correct side of the average are taken, and the rest are skipped.

FAQ

Why is Momentum centred on 100 instead of zero?
Because MT5 defines it as a ratio: the current price divided by the price N bars ago, times 100. An unchanged price gives exactly 100. The zero-centred version you see elsewhere is a subtraction rather than a division, and it is denominated in the instrument's price units instead of being proportional. Both are called momentum; only one of them is what iMomentum returns, so thresholds have to be written for the right one.
Is Momentum the same as Rate of Change?
Mathematically they are the same shape shifted by 100. ROC is normally `(close / close[N] − 1) × 100`, which equals this indicator's value minus 100. That is why MQL5 has no separate iROC and why the Builder has no ROC node — subtract 100 from Momentum and you have it.
What period should I use?
14 is MT5's default and the template's baseline, but the honest answer is that it depends on what you consider a move. Momentum reads exactly two prices, so the period is not a smoothing window — it is the length of the comparison. A short period asks 'is this bar higher than a few bars ago', a long one asks about the swing. Re-validate any value on your own pair rather than importing it.
Can Momentum be used for divergence in an EA?
Not with the node palette alone. Divergence means comparing the sequence of price extremes with the sequence of indicator extremes, which needs swing detection and multi-bar memory. The baseline cross and the side-of-100 filter are single-bar conditions and are expressible today; divergence needs custom MQL5.
Can I build a Momentum EA without coding?
Yes. The Momentum 100 Cross + MA template wires a Momentum node and a Constant set to 100 into Cross nodes, gates both directions on price against a 50-period EMA, and moves the stop to break-even once the trade is far enough ahead — period, applied price and the EMA settings are all EA inputs.
How should I validate settings before going live?
Backtest on quality tick data first, then run the EA on a demo account before risking money. Be careful with thresholds other than 100: because the output is unbounded and instrument-dependent in magnitude, a level tuned on one pair rarely transfers. Hold back data the search never saw and prefer settings that stay profitable across periods over the single in-sample peak.
